Electrolux racing to meet high refrigerator, freezer demand brought about by COVID-19 pandemic

According to Electrolux Manufacturing, the COVID-19 pandemic has sharply increased the demand for home appliances, especially refrigerators and freezers, as more people chose to stay home and eat at home.

"They are turning them out on a regular basis, unbelievable numbers they really can't keep up because of COVID," said Anderson County Administrator Rusty Burns. "COVID has increased the demand people who never thought they’d need a freezer are now going, you know a freezer might be a good thing to have and you know people who had one refrigerator are going you know maybe if I had another refrigerator that might be a good thing to have, so I know they’ve been racing to keep up."

The spike in demand has lead Electrolux to ramp up production in their Anderson County manufacturing facility and continue to look for opportunities to expand in the coming weeks and months on top of their $250 million construction expansion effort originally announced in 2017.

"We understand how important appliances are to families, especially now as they remain close to home," Electrolux spokesperson Eloise Hale said. "This has caused demand for kitchen appliances to significantly increase and exceed the industry's supply chain. The industry is selling all the refrigerators and freezers being manufactured."

With such high demand, the continued expansion efforts are said to bring further capital investment and job opportunities to Anderson County, something county officials applaud.

"They are one of the major employers in Anderson County over 2,000 jobs, this new investment over 250 million dollars is a continuation of a lot of investment they’ve had in the county," said Burns. "We’re looking for, A the huge capital investment, and we're also looking for the new employees they're going to be hiring so they’ve just been a long-time community partner and we’re very proud of them."

Samsung recalls washing machines due to fire risk

Samsung is recalling several models of top-load washers that can short-circuit and overheat, posing a fire hazard.

According to a news release from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Samsung has received 51 reports of smoking, melting, overheating or fire involving the washers, 10 of which resulted in property damage. Three consumers have reported injuries due to smoke inhalation.

The washers were sold in white, black, champagne and ivory colors at Best Buy, Costco, The Home Depot, Lowe's and other appliance stores nationwide and online at Samsung.com from June 2021 through December 2022 for between $900 and $1,500.

The recall includes top-load washers with super speed wash in model series WA49B, WA50B, WA51A, WA52A, WA54A and WA55A.

If you own one of these washers, Samsung advises to check the machine's software to see if it was updated to prevent the hazard and, if not, immediately stop using the washer until the software is updated.

Washers equipped with Wi-Fi that are plugged into a power source and actively connected to the internet will automatically download the software repair update needed to prevent this hazard.

Anyone who owns a washer without Wi-Fi capability should immediately stop using the washer and contact Samsung directly for a free tool that can be plugged in to download the necessary software.
